What makes a great real estate team leader? If people are expected to trust you with their time and financial security, what will you bring to the table to let them know they’re in good hands? Today, we’re sharing five qualities of a winning real estate team leader to move your teams, colleagues, and communities forward with confidence. Read on for a breakdown of the attributes that inspire others to follow you, work with you and give you their best.
Communication
Strong communication is a quality you should embody at all times in this industry and beyond. In the unpredictable world of real estate, communication may be the most important quality you can possess. As an agent and particularly as a team leader, no one will trust you if they feel left in the dark or that you’re leaving key details out. Communication is about clarity – but it’s not all about talking. It’s a two-way street, in which your team members must feel like they have a voice. So remember to listen first, fully digest the information, then give a clear and thoughtful response. This same level of communication translates over to your clients who you will guide through the home buying process.
Vision
If you’re a leader, then you’re building something. That could be your personal success, your team, legacy, or a stronger community (preferably it’s all of the above). And in order to build something, you need to have a vision for what you’re building. Having that vision is one of the top qualities of a winning real estate team leader. So what’s yours? Think about it, visualize it and fully understand it before you communicate it to your team. Be specific about your vision and work with those around you to make it a reality!
Empathy
We know that listening skills are important, but we must actively pay attention to more than the words being spoken. Having empathy as a leader requires being in touch with other peoples’ feelings as well as your own. Being empathetic shows your coworkers that you value them and care about their feelings. Understand that each team member has different needs and it’s your job to meet them. For example, someone on the team may not have the courage to speak to you directly about an issue and instead leave subtle hints about their feelings, hoping you’ll read them. You must be able to sense this and respond appropriately. If someone is feeling overworked or undervalued, being aware allows you to lift them up and make the team stronger as a whole.
Courage
As in any industry or facet of life, great rewards require great risks. If you are too careful, you will likely never achieve the goals you wish to accomplish in your career. As a team leader, you must decide many things on behalf of the group. Therefore, you have to be able to motivate the team to take those risks when necessary. Real estate is an ever evolving business that requires its leaders to possess enough courage to adapt. For that reason, courage is one of our qualities of a winning real estate team leader. Leadership is not for the weak of heart, so be resilient and courageous in your approach.
Decisiveness
From the bottom to the very top level in real estate, countless important decisions are made every day. One of the main parts of your job as a team leader is to consider the ideas of the group. However, not every decision should be made by the committee. There is a reason you’re in charge and you must never lose sight of that. You have the vision. If something isn’t working and needs to change, you’re the one capable of changing it. So make your team feel heard and take input, then use your best judgement to make the decision yourself. And once it’s made, stick to it!
