Home decorating trends come and go. As a homeowner, how can you keep your home stylish without breaking the bank every time a new trend emerges? The key is timeless decorating: choosing the right colors, furniture, and décor to keep your home looking stylish through the years.

Timeless Decorating Tips to Keep Your Home in Style

Whether you have a sprawling home or a small condo, you can find ways to keep your décor from going out of style. These timeless decorating tips will help you create a space that stands the test of time.

1.      Keep a Simple Color Palette

Too often, homeowners paint their interior walls in trendy colors, only to tire of the palette within a year. Even worse: those color schemes can date your home, making it more difficult to sell when you’re ready.

Instead, keep your color palette neutral. Tried and true palettes – muted grays or beiges, whites, and other neutral colors – never go out of style. And you can still add that pop of color through artwork and other accents.

2.      Incorporate Timeless Elements

When choosing fixtures, lighting, windows, doors, and other elements, stick with classic choices. Though it may be tempting to go with a bold option now, many trendy home décor choices go out of style within a few years.

Instead, choose less risky fixtures, install classic lighting, and choose time-tested windows and doors.

3.      Add Greenery

Decorating with plants provides endless options. You can incorporate small succulents to accent a bookshelf or tabletop or add dramatic, large potted plants that fill up a corner.

Home-grown plants have a long and distinguished history. Tales of indoor gardens date back to 600 B.C. and beyond. If you’re looking for timeless decorating, plant life is perhaps the most timeless of them all.

4.      Incorporate Vintage Pieces

It might seem counterintuitive, but adding vintage and antique pieces to your space can make it feel classic and timeless. Incorporating these elements adds a bit of history and warmth to any room. And because these pieces have lasted this long, they’re likely made much sturdier than anything you can find in a big box store.

Not only will vintage pieces hold up to years of abuse, but they’ll also give a timeless feel to your interior design.

5.      Organic Materials

For instance, a sturdy wood table, a giant wicker basket, or natural stone flooring are perfect for adding a timeless decorating element to your space.

6.      Add Artwork

If the neutral color palette, indoor plants, and natural materials have you craving something more splashy, consider investing in some incredible artwork. However, it can be tricky to choose artwork that won’t go out of style.

To ensure that your home’s artwork is timeless, find something that really represents your personality and sense of style. Sure, your tastes might change over the years. But if you find (or create) a piece of artwork that speaks to you and reflects your personality, it’s a safe bet you’ll still love it 30 years from now.

7.      It’s All Very Black and White

A monochromatic color palette might seem uninteresting at first, but decorating in black and white is a simple and elegant way to keep your home timeless. This color scheme also acts as a blank slate, allowing you to add pops of color that can be easily changed as trends shift.

Black and white are particularly useful if you’re going for a more minimalist aesthetic.

Trends come and go, but timeless decorating is achievable. By incorporating these ideas into your interior design, you can create a space that will stand the test of time.
